Course Description
This introductory course is designed for students who wish to acquire essential communication skills in Maltese for everyday use, employment, further study, and personal integration into Maltese society.
The course provides a practical introduction to the language, focusing on basic grammar, high-frequency vocabulary, and commonly used expressions. Alongside language development, students are introduced to key aspects of Maltese culture and social conventions to support meaningful and appropriate communication in real-life situations.
By the end of the course, students will have developed the confidence to understand and use simple spoken and written Maltese, enabling them to manage basic interactions in home, workplace, and public environments.

Course Structure
Module 1: First Encounters and Everyday Interaction
This module introduces learners to Maltese through simple social exchanges. Students learn how to greet others, introduce themselves, and share basic personal details in a variety of everyday situations. The focus is on building confidence in speaking from the outset, using simple sentence patterns and commonly used expressions.
Module 2: Personal Life and Daily Routines
In this module, learners expand their ability to talk about themselves and the people around them. Topics include family relationships, friendships, interests, and daily activities. Learners are introduced to possessive forms and basic present-tense structures. Everyday themes such as food and drink are used to develop vocabulary and introduce plural forms in a meaningful context.
Module 3: Places, Directions, and Leisure Time
This module focuses on language needed to describe places and activities outside the home. Learners practice asking and answering simple questions related to location, movement, and distance. Vocabulary for directions, common adjectives, and basic descriptive language is introduced, enabling learners to talk about their surroundings and leisure activities.
Module 4: Language in the Home and Workplace
This module explores communication in domestic and work-related settings. Learners are introduced to differences between informal and more formal language use in Maltese. Through practical scenarios, students learn to describe work routines, household activities, and social interactions, while reflecting on cultural differences between Malta and their own backgrounds.
Module 5: Living and Communicating in Malta
The final module consolidates language learned throughout the course and places it within a local Maltese context. Learners revisit key vocabulary and structures through practical tasks designed to support real-life communication. Reflection activities encourage learners to assess their progress and identify pathways for continued language development beyond the course.
Entry Requirements
This course is intended for learners aged 16 years and over who have little or no prior knowledge of Maltese.
No formal entry qualifications are required.
A certficate of attendance shall be provided at the end of the course.
